What is a Pacemaker and why is it required?
A pacemaker is a device that is designed to provide an electrical signal to the heart muscle and help maintain a proper rhythm. There are a number of pacemakers and the particular model selected is based on the specific condition of the patient, but all pacemakers share a common design. The pacemaker will consist of 2 major pieces: a small metal box that contains a battery and other electronic components and an insulated wire called a lead which then carries the electrical impulses up to the heart. The pacemaker will be permanently implanted in your chest and depending on your condition either one or 2 leads will be attached to the heart muscle. When does an individual require a pacemaker? The heart is located in the center left of the chest enclosed within the breastbone and rib cage. The rhythmic contraction causes the blood to circulate.
